Career transition counseling and EMDR


Career transition counseling often includes or requires PTSD intervention. Many clients have been forced to leave an employment situation because of traumatic or dysfunctional communication with a boss, partner or coworkers. For other clients, career transitions arouse generalized fears of life change based in previous traumatic events. EMDR has provided necessary relief of those anxieties and allowed clients to move ahead with their professional lives. When a client has been away from work due to an injury, childrearing, or sabbatical, they face the prospect of identifying possible employment, responding to advertisements, answering interview questions, and showing up for work - all anxiety producing situations. In my practice, EMDR has been effective in helping clients overcome fears, sort out career desires, and face frightening dinner interviews with hiring executives. Male and female clients have benefited from EMDR sessions that cleared blocks to professional advancement. After identifying a goal of moving up the organizational ladder we used EMDR to reduce resentment of authority figures, fear of speaking in an executive staff meeting, and making difficult staff decisions. In this Conversation Hour, I will briefly describe the career and professional development applications of EMDR in my consulting practice and provide an opportunity for participants to share their experiences. Through discussion, question and answer, we will gain the benefit of each others' experiences and enhance our practices.
