Resource building for people with a learning disability

Description

People with a learning disability have often experienced invalidating environments and therefore require particular help with resource building before desensitization can proceed. Furthermore people with a learning disability have difficulty in processing verbal information and utilising verbal cues. This mini-workshop presents some ways in which the authors have been able to facilitate resource building using objects, stories, pictures, and the kinaesthetic awareness of ‘being grounded’. The authors discuss how these strategies can be used to help with ‘challenging behaviour’.
