A randomised controlled trial on the effects of EMDR supportive therapy and waiting list group on depression, anxiety, PTSD levels and coping strategies in a group of unemployed individuals

Description

Objectives: The present study aims to experimentally test for differences between EMDR, supportive therapy and waiting list group on depression, anxiety, post-traumatic symptomatology and use of coping strategies in a group of recently unemployed individuals in Greece and Spain. These two Southern European countries have been chosen, since they have both being impacted by the economic crisis.

Method: This is a randomised controlled trial with 30 individuals being allocated to EMDR, 30 in supportive therapy following Egan’s problem focused training and 30 individuals being allocated in a waiting list group. The two former groups will receive therapy over a period of 12 weeks, with a follow-up at the end of 6 months. For ethical reasons the waiting list group will receive treatment at the end of the 6 months. The primary outcome measures are changes in depression, anxiety levels, post-traumatic symptomatology and increases in the use of more adaptive coping strategies. These measures will be administered at recruitment, end of therapy and again at 6 months.

Recruitment of unemployed individuals has started in the middle of January 2014. This will be an iterative process, which will continue until enough participants have been recruited. Random assignment will be blocked in groups of 12 consecutive participants, so in each block 4 participants will be assigned in each condition.

Results: An intention to treat analysis will be followed. Years of therapist s’ experience will be treated as a covariate in a between groups ANCOVA analysis.
