Taller than the ceiling: How to use EMDR in patients with autism

Autism spectrum disorders, in both CAMHS and adult presentations, are characterised by aberrant processing and understanding of information, with often an interactive traumatogenic effect. Individuals who are very ‘matter of fact’ can benefit from standard EMDR protocol. Understanding certain specifics and patterns of mood and behaviour is important, as are the many ways of utilising pictorial methods. Complexity can be deconstructed in i.e. attachment, forensic repercussions as a forum for treatment of patients and their families, using a systemic approach.
