Fear is a complex problem. Sometimes a scary situation is really dangerous; there fear is appropriate. "Butterflies" in an otherwise competent rider are within the normal range and may even improve performance. However, as Dr. Nacey describes, when past experiences live on in the body and intrude at inappropriate times, new learning is compromised. EMDR was developed specifically to relieve persistent conditioned fear responses. It's a time for more of us to use it and help riders let go of unnecessary suffering, ride to the best of their ability, and have more fun.
